Musi, Or Let's Give Our Shoes a Little Spangle

Hello!  And welcome to MAB talks about jewelry marks, stamps, and makers.  And whatnot!

Let's take a look at the fabulous Musi, a New York City-based company that manufactured mainly shoe clips.

Murray Simon founded the company in the mid-fifties.  Wanting a name that sounded Italian, he took the first two letters from his first and last names, creating Musi.  Here are a few examples of the marks for this maker, usually a copyright symbol, with MUSI in all caps:

Mr. Simon went on to form the wildly successful company Battani, Ltd. in the early 1960s, manufacturing coordinating boots, shoes, and other items.  Here's an article from the New York Times archive with additional information:

Musi shoe clips were part of the post World War II world of suburban aspirational glamour.  Clips were an easy way to add sparkle to any garment or accessory.  With little pinch clips on the back, you could attach these ornaments to anything, and suddenly you were as fabulous as Marlene Dietrich or Lana Turner.

The Musi company made shoe clips of all kinds, especially rhinestone clips that could turn a basic pump into a cocktail party statement moment.

Here are a few Musi shoe clips currently listed in my Etsy shop, OtterCatHaus:

Black rhinestone swag shoe clips

Black rhinestone fancy shoe clips

Dark silvertone metal filigree flower shoe clips

To add a little Hollywood Regency glitter to your next occasion, or to snazz up those slippers while you lounge at home watching Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, try a pair of shoe clips!   Take every chance you can to sparkle.

Take care--
